The PARADOX paintings quite self consciously deals with an issue I have pursued in other series of painting: juxtaposing areas of the painting which are handled in a quite conspicuously different manner and which, at first glance might seem quite incompatible with each other. However, the longer I worked on the initial pieces in this series, the more I felt that the finished painting did succeed in arriving at a surprising perhaps, harmonious conclusion. I liked that the initial reaction to any one of these works would be surprise to see such evident visual distinctions, and yet that the result was all the more satisfying because of the initial surprise.
